The Medicare Levy Demystified

What Is the Medicare Levy?

The Medicare Levy helps fund Australia’s public healthcare system. Most taxpayers pay 2% of their taxable income.

Who Pays It?

If your income exceeds the threshold ($24,276 for singles in 2024–25), you’ll likely pay the levy. Families have higher thresholds.

Medicare Levy Surcharge

If you earn over $90,000 and don’t have private hospital cover, you may pay an additional surcharge of 1–1.5%.

Exemptions

  • Low-income earners
  • Foreign residents
  • Individuals with medical exemptions

How to Check

Use the ATO’s Medicare Levy Calculator to see if you qualify for an exemption or reduction.
